The Bangkok Lounge

Makenzie ยท

The entrance is genuinely a little sketchy - you'll find yourself on the second floor of a King Street building wondering if you've made a mistake - but once you're in it's a full-on karaoke tiki machine running seven nights a week. They bill themselves as Charleston's only 7-a-week karaoke bar and they put real numbers behind it: eight frozen drink machines, happy hour 4 to 7 nightly, and a theme every single night of the week. Metal karaoke on Monday, country on Thursday, rap night Wednesday, and they do drag karaoke with, in their words, "Charleston's best drag queens." The drink side is the whole identity: slushy frozen tiki drinks off those machines and their Bangkok Punch, which they sell in punch bowls for half price on Monday. Cheap, loud, and committed.

My friend and I went up for a $2.50 bourbon during the Thursday country night and I thought we'd be the only sober, non-singing adults in the room. We were not. The crowd is exactly what a King Street karaoke dive should be: groups of guys, groups of girls, at least one person who is absolutely not a tourist learning that fact about themselves. The songs are actually good.

This place is either lively as hell or completely dead - there is no in-between.
