Henery's On the Market

Makenzie ยท

It's been pouring drinks on Market Street since 1932, which makes it the oldest continuously running restaurant in the state, and you can feel the years in the room without it ever turning into a museum. The building has several levels - a music hall, a whiskey lounge, a rooftop - and it functions more like a small venue complex than a bar, with live music on the calendar pretty much every night, jazz being the house sound. The rooftop is the part people go for: two patios with overstuffed couches and actual rugs, which is exactly what a rooftop bar should not have and exactly what makes it feel like a favorite old dive instead of a try-hard. Their old fashioned is made with Ben & Steel's, the local whiskey, and the rum punch is the other drink to order.

We came in on a hot afternoon and ended up staying for the evening set, which is the normal progression here. It's right across from the city market, the crowd is a real mix of locals, tourists, and people who just like to sit somewhere with history in it, and it's in the middle of the price range - not cheap, not trying to be. The food is good if you're hungry, but this is the bar you come to for the room and the music.
