Sugey's Bar

Makenzie ยท

They describe themselves as "heavy metal maniacs!!! Rock n roller dive + hellforged tiki lounge," which is exactly what it is: a tiny room, about thirty people at capacity, that's built entirely for a crowd that's comfortable in its own skin. You walk past the bouncer - they're not kidding about that - and you're in a space lit neon red under a disco ball, with an Iron Maiden pinball machine, classic horror films looping on the TV, and concert posters from a specific era of UK punk and underground metal covering the walls. It's one of the more genuinely weird bars on King Street, and it's not trying to be anything else.

The drinks are cheap, the mixed drinks are decent, and the staff are the kind of friendly that makes a room this small feel like a club you belong to. They run karaoke every Monday and a comedy night on the first Sunday of the month, which is the sort of thing only a place with this much personality would think to do. It's cheap, it's niche, and if you're into the scene it's the kind of bar you'll tell people about and they'll need to come see it to believe it.
