The Windjammer

Makenzie ·

It's been a beach bar on the Isle of Palms since 1972, founded by two brothers, and in the fifty-plus years since it has become the default answer to "where do you go on the island for live music?" The room is set right at Front Beach, so the whole experience is half bar and half ocean: you're a few steps from the sand, the light does something to the room in the late afternoon, and the crowd is exactly as casual as the weather. Beach attire is the dress code. The menu is straightforward beach eats - buffalo wings, cheeseburgers, fish and chips - and it's not where you go to be surprised by the food, which is the correct expectation for the place.

The music is the whole reason. Local bands, regional acts, and the occasional big-name artist have all played here, and the room is big enough to feel like a real show without being so big you lose the beach bar feeling. It welcomes everyone: a grandmother with a piña colada watching the sun come down, a bachelor party working on a story, a family with under-21s and a parent. That's the range, and it's the whole point.
