Tommy Condon's Irish Pub

Makenzie ยท

It's been an Irish pub on Church Street since 1984, and the room is full of the kind of detail that tells you the owner actually went and got the stuff: after Hurricane Hugo, Tommy Condon himself made multiple trips to Ireland and came back with antique mirrors and Irish memorabilia that cover the walls. The mirrors do what the place wants them to do - the whole room feels like it's been there for a hundred years and is a little warmer for it. It's one of the best-executed of the handful of Irish pubs in the greater Charleston area, and it's casual: no dress code, families welcome, dogs actually greeted by name.

The live music runs Wednesday through Sunday - Irish and Irish-American, the kind of thing you lean in and sing along to, and the whole room does it together. The food is a mix of true Irish fare and lowcountry: shepherds pie, corned beef and cabbage, but also shrimp and grits and fish and chips, which is the correct menu for an Irish pub that lives in Charleston. It's in the middle of the price range, the drinks are solid, and it's the kind of place you can sit at for a while without anyone hurrying you.
