Cutty Bar & Grill

Makenzie ยท

You won't find it the way you find other bars. There's no sign to speak of - a small sticker on a brick wall across from D'Al's pizza - and that's the whole personality of the place. It's a tiny, dimly lit dive in Elliottborough that has been running on pure local goodwill since 2012, and the people who go there treat it like a family they chose, which the reviews make weirdly clear. The bar is small enough that everyone eventually knows everyone, the bartenders are generous, the prices are the cheapest in the neighborhood, and the pool table and pinball see actual traffic. They do bingo on Wednesday, which I think is the single most Cutty detail I know.

The crowd is young locals, a few returning regulars who have been here for a decade, and the occasional curious visitor who wandered in off St. Philip and is now slightly intimidated. The drink list is long for a place this small and the cocktails aren't bad. The food is what it is - it's a dive - but the beer selection punches above its weight. It's the kind of place you don't recommend; it's the kind of place a friend tells you about and you're not supposed to tell anyone else.
