Moe's Crosstown Tavern has been voted Best Neighborhood Bar by the Charleston City Paper fifteen years in a row and Best Pub Food nine years in a row, and both claims hold up. It's on Rutledge Avenue near Hampton Park, open till 2 a.m. every night, and it's the kind of no-frills local spot that out-of-towners find by accident and come back for the next day. The neighborhood gets a bad reputation from passing tourists - one review literally says "the neighborhood looks scary, but the place is worth it" - and that's the thing about Moe's: it's the real deal, not a performance for the visitor.
The food is better than the typical pub plate: the burgers are all winners according to the magazine, the wings are full of meat and properly sauced, and the happy hour snacks keep the after-work crowd at the bar. Craft beer is on tap, the TVs are on, and the room is cozy without being dark or divey. It's a regulars' bar, a sports bar, and a dinner spot all at once, and the price is casual. It's the place you go when you want to feel like a Charlestonian for an evening.
