Coleman Public House is the Mount Pleasant answer to people who don't want to cross the bridge for a beer. It's a neighborhood haunt in the Shem Creek area that has been around since 2010, and the whole identity is built on a 16-tap room that rotates constantly - local and regional ales, with a growler program for the people who want to bring it home. The food is upscale-casual pub fare: burgers, flatbreads, fish and chips, and a smoked gouda mac and cheese with pecan-smoked bacon and white truffle oil that people go out of their way to mention. The California burger with bacon, avocado, and garlic fries is the sleeper dish.
It's laid-back and unpretentious - more of a regulars' spot than a tourist destination, which is exactly what it's built for. They serve lunch, dinner, and brunch six days a week, and the crowd is local: families, groups, and the kind of people who know which tap is on and what's rotating out. There's a sister restaurant across town at Maybank Public House, and gift cards work at both, so if you're in the neighborhood and the tap list looks good, this is an easy evening that doesn't ask for much.
